UK’s Prime Minister angry about lack of infertility coverage

Medical News Today’s July 10, 2008 article was written regarding the Prime Minister’s discontent with the current lack of infertility treatment and coverage in the UK. In light of the coming “National Infertility Day,” happening on July 19th and celebrating 30 years of IVF treatment, the Prime Minster and other officials spoke out against the appallingly little amount of support and respect that infertile couples have received in England in the past and present. Infertile couples must seek IVF privately for assistance, rather than what could be a much more cost efficient way of dealing with their unfortunate struggle, being able to proceed with treatment through coverage from their own public health care.

The All Party Parliamentary Group on Infertility held a reception in celebration and recognition of 30 years of IVF, however, anxiety still remained as couples can’t seem to gain the worldwide support of IVF treatment through public health care. Regardless of the statement made by the Secretary State for Health that Primary Care Trusts “should provide at least one full cycle of IVF by April 2005,” the coverage just isn’t there, even with the support of such a prominently political figure as the Prime Minister. Hopefully one day Infertile couples can experience the gift of a child without having to bury themselves in a financial rut. We hope the same for our couples in the US as well, as most insurance companies here do not pay for any IVF treatment.

I’m in Canada and oyr public health coverage doesn’t cover enough infertility treatments at all. I truly believe the Australian system is a great model!

I love your site by the way!
